Question by BFM4L: Are these gas saving tips legit?
My girlfriend and me were debating about ways to save money on gasoline and she was trying to give me some tips and I just don’t think they make sense. Tell me what you think.

Tip 1: Always fill up your tank before it get to the half full mark as there will be less room for the gas to evaporate.

Tip 2: Always fill the tank up in the morning when the weather is cooler. When it’s colder the molecules of gasoline will be less active. Then as the day gets warmer the molecules move faster and spread out…. In other words when you fill up in the morning the gas is still, then as the day gets warmer the molecules expand and it creates more gas.

Tip 3: Fill up your car slowly, because when you fill it at a faster rate more gas vapors escape from the pump costing you more.

**This all sounds like crap to me as I have read alot of “gas saving tips” and have never came upon these.

2. is true…. the gas is more dense in the morning when it is cooler.

the first one doesn’t make any sense because gas has nowhere to evaporate to???

the third doesn’t make alot of sense either… if you fill up slower… thats more time for gasses to escape…. either way, i don’t think you would notice the tiny amount of gasses that escape into the air.

  1. The amount of fuel you “save” filling up is negligible compared to the way you drive.

Slow down your rate of acceleration when you come off a stop…Try to maintain a constant RPM – say between 2000 and 2500…Accelerate without using overdrive when getting on a highway – you may not not be able to avoid this on short onramps…Use a slower speed on the highway, even if it means staying in the right lane…Make sure the vehicle engine is tuned up and that the tires are properly inflated.

These will really help you conserve fuel.

    All the best.

  2. #2 is NOT true because the temperature of the gasoline stored in an underground tank is constant, sort of like a wine cellar. It will expand as it warms in your car’s tank, but it is the same temperature in the storage tank no matter what time of day you pump it.

  3. none of that shit really works, it does a little but its not noticeable
