Question by GUMBY: First motorcycle question?
Hey so im looking in to getting a motorcycle. I would like to get a sport styled one. It would be my first one, so im looking for one probably around 500cc. I really do not know where to start and am saving up to eventually get a nice one. I would definitely choose a used one for the sake of money and insurance, etc. My dad is a pretty big motorcycle guy so I wont need much help on actually riding and safety “tips” but im just wondering which manufacturer and where i should start looking. And again, I would only go for a sport sytled one. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Haha of course i will be taking a class before hand. Ive had my license for about a year and wont be running up anyone’s insurance due to my parents’ being ridiculously high

  1. If I were you I would look into Honda’s cbr600 4fi. they are light good looking bikes and that are easily maintained but as all the perks a performance sports bike should have. I’m sure you could find one reasonably cheep (wiki says $ 8,499) and would be a great beginner to intermediate bike and if need be you could always step up to a cbr 600rr if you want more performance.

  2. Honda 600cc would be my choice. They are well mannered.
Don’t get a motorcycle too small. It only takes a short time to acclimate to a bike, and if you get a 250cc, you will need a bigger bike soon, but won’t have the money to move up.

  3. the MTT Y2K would be a perfect bike for you to learn on.

  4. A 250 is plenty for a novice to take their first steps on – spend what you save on helmet, jacket, boots and gloves.

Where you are will govern what is available in the secondhand market – I believe in the US the only modern(ish) sporty option is a Kawasaki, Australia and Europe have a wider range of options.

  5. all manufactures are pretty much the same now . please avoid Chinese bikes though they are nothing but trouble

  6. Good 500cc bikes i recommend for a starter bike are Honda CBF500, Honda CB500, Kawasaki ER-5 or GPZ500.

However i would say Honda have much better build qaulity than the old kawasaki’s.

WRONG-O!! Proficient riding is not genetic. Start here: http://online2.msf-usa.org/msf/Default.aspx

  8. Depends on your personality what type of bike is good for you, but generally speaking i would say a 600cc bike, sport or touring model, for at least your first year…oh yeah it’s cool your dad rides too, but take the local motorcycle safety course, you can’t go wrong with extra knowledge…
