Question by .: Do women in Thailand use the “rape scam” against foreigners as much as the women in the Philippines do?
A rape scam is when a foreigner travels to a foreign country and hits it off really well with one of the local women. They go out for a few drinks, dances, and then go back to his hotel where they have consensual sexual intercourse. She leaves and then returns within a few short hours with a police officer who is in on the scam. The demand that the man pay $ 5,000 USD or he will be charged with rape. If the man refuses to pay then the police officer files a case against the man and he is arrested and put in a jail until the trial clears him of the charge which usually takes several months. If for some reason he is convicted then he spends the rest of his life in a jail cell in that country. Even if he is not convicted he could loose his job and has all of that lost income due to the lengthy judicial procedures. This is the number 1 syndicated crime against foreigners in the Philippines. Does this happen a lot in Thailand and if not why not? Are there any laws in Thailand to protect foreigners against this type of scam?

Interesting question. After having been to both countries many times, and being a frequent reader of several expat forums in each country, I think it is pretty much restricted to the Philippines. It is the forums that usually report scams and I have never read of this common Philippine scam happening in Thailand.

  1. I’ve never heard of anyone being a victim of the “rape scam” in Thailand, not that I would know if it’s ever happened before.

I have heard of many cases of “victims” who have had drugs slipped into their drinks, and when they awake many hours later, find everything they own stolen from them.

I think one big reason you don’t hear of the “rape scam” in Thailand is that it’s pretty hard to say you were raped when you met the girl in a massage parlor or bar that provides prostitutes.

  2. It this scam is used it never makes it to the news. There are so many other scams the Thais use, jewelry scam, tuk tuk scam, duty free shop scam, planted drugs scam, littering scam, taxi mafia, double pricing, the list is almost endless and most are run by the police. They must have missed this one.

  3. geez – I’ve been here a while and never heard of this – and it is likely that i would have if this went on here – - you should take this question down – - don’t want to give anyone any ideas – -

  4. Rape scams are not at all common in Thailand. Probably because rape charges and rape cases in general are rare – for various reasons, Thai women are quite reluctant to make any such incidents public.
Another reason that rape scams are not used could be that the alleged perpetrator could claim that he paid for the sex. Whether true or not, this would make the alleged victim a prostitute, which means she’d be breaking the law.

  5. First of all I have to correct you when you generalize all women of either country as scamming when you only encounter a group of lowlives/criminals that targets naive tourists like you.

Second…As a tourist, you should be aware that in any country you visit, there are criminals who specifically targets foreigners. Because of this, you should be travel-smart and alert, and pay close attention to your surroundings. Do not trust strangers, do not drink anything they offer, do not take them into where you are staying.

If because of your stupidity you ended up a victim of this type of setup, you can always call up your embassy and ask for a support for your legal representation. Oftentimes these scammers are comprised of a syndicate with 1 or 2 corrupt cops conniving, so telling the truth that you did not do anything wrong plus saying these are scammers will go a long way and will most likely cause the charges against you dropped and even the rotten cop/s and his gangmates arrested.

  6. My answer is yes, not an informed answer, however your question is indicative as to why you are traveling there and I for one would like to persuade you not to go there as your reasns seem obvious. If you do, I hope you experience the problems I am sure you describe. STAY AT HOME

  7. Never happened to me, but why not? This is a new one.

  8. They scream for their 2000baht for services rendered. Never heard of them screaming rape.
