The life of a college student can be care-free and alot of fun. Unfortunately this “college experience” is often being financed by future debt. Tuition and housing costs are rising, and students often turn to their credit cards as a way to pay for it all. Within the last couple years, major changes to how 18-21 year olds receive credit cards, have been enacted by the Obama administration. The CARD Act of 2009 makes it difficult for students without a job or other source of income, to receive a new card. This may help to curb student debt, but many issues keep kids stuck in this “debt trap”.

How The CARD Act Changes Student Credit

The CARD Act was enacted in 2009 to reduce the credit card debts incurred before students even have a chance to get a job. The Act states that students under the age of 21 must prove they can pay their bills before they can apply for a credit card. Students will still be able to get a card if they have a co-signer. A co-signer will take on all the responsibility of this debt. The CARD Act also creates new rules to prevent campus giveaways and makes late fees more clear. These changes have already made a significant dent in costs incurred by students and other consumers.

Tuition Costs and Student Loan Debt

A major problem contributing to enormous student loan debt and defaults, are “for profit” educational institutions. These “diploma mills” offer very little educational value, but significant costs. “For profit” colleges are heavily advertised on television, mostly to a low income demographic. They typically offer very little in the way of job placement, but the debt incurred can be significant. Recently the Department of Education restricted funding to schools which had a student loan default rate of more than 25% for 3 consecutive years or more. These regulations help to control educational institutions that specifically target low income people, without offering much opportunity to its graduates.

Obama Responds to Rising Tuition Costs

In the past year, tuition costs at four year schools rose an average of $631 (8% increase). Recently new rules have been announced to reduce this debt from graduates. The rules that will be enacted require that loan repayments cannot be more than 10% of a graduates discretionary income. Also any debt that is not repayed will be forgiven after a 20 year period (previously this was 25 years). Almost six million graduates will be allowed to consolidate their government loans to save them $100s of dollars in interest each month.

When students are on their own for the first time, they are particularly vulnerable to debt. At this time, they may not be financially savvy or understand what kind of ramifications their actions will be. A loan default can severely damage credit (here are some tips on how to repair it) and follow these kids for up to 10 years. Changes that the Obama administration has made to reduce the financial burden on students can help kids get educated without ruining them financially.

Over recent years credit cards have provided a huge number of people with convenience, ease, flexibility and in some cases a real financial lifeline. However, whilst many people have benefitted from credit cards there are many who have seen their credit card balances increase month on month until they are maxed out to the hilt. It is important with credit card debt – particularly high interest credit card debt – to try and clear the balance as quickly as possible to avoid being stung for huge amounts of interest or drowning in credit card debt for years to come.

There are a number of ways in which you can clear your credit cards more quickly and help pay off credit card debt in order to avoid being caught up in a web of credit card debt for many years to come. Some of the options available to help you clear expensive credit card debt on a high interest card include:

Pay more than the minimum payment: If you stick to making only the minimum repayment each month you will find that you will be paying the debt off for many years to come, even on a modest amount of debt. You will also pay a fortune in interest by doing this. You should pay off as much as you can each month, as even paying a small amount over and above the minimum can help you to repay your credit card debt more quickly

Transfer your balance onto a 0 percent card: It can be really helpful to transfer the outstanding balance from your high interest credit card onto a 0 percent balance transfer card. Whilst you will probably have to pay a transfer fee, which is generally a percentage of the total amount being transferred, you can then enjoy a generous period of interest free credit within which to repay your transferred debt. There are also life of balance transfer cards, where you can benefit from a really low rate of interest for the life of the transferred balance, which is ideal for those who feel that they need a little longer to repay the debt

Consider consolidation: If you are struggling with both credit card debt and other unsecured debts such as loans and overdrafts, you may want to consider consolidation. This is where you wrap up all of your smaller debts with one larger one, the advantage being that you only have one creditor to deal with, can manage your debts more easily and could even reduce the amount of interest that you pay and the amount of your monthly repayment

When it comes to credit card spending, there are a few different personality categories that you can fall into. Your credit card personality says a lot about you as a person. How you choose to spend the money and how often you use your credit card can say a lot about your lifestyle, and your personality.

There are four main types of credit card personalities. They include:

The Early Bird

Punctual Pete

Clinging on Christine

Reckless Ruth

The Early Bird

The early bird is the best type of credit card personality that you can have. You will pay all of your bills early. Before the monthly statement has had a chance to be sent to your home address, you will have paid off the full balance.

You are a responsible borrower, and you will typically have quite a good credit history. If you no longer need a credit card then you will close the account. Everything is done earlier than it needs to be, and this will also spill out into your everyday life. You will like to be early for everything and you hate being kept waiting.

Punctual Pete

If you like to pay your credit card debt off on time then your credit card personality is Punctual Pete. You will aim to pay off most of the balance and you will put aside one evening to write out all of your checks. Sometimes you may need the credit as a short term loan. However most of the time it serves as a convenience. Just like an early bird, you will have a really good credit rating.

Clinging On Christine

If you pay slightly more than the minimum each month then you will be a clinging on Christine. You will typically have quite a high balance left to pay. Your monthly income will not cover your monthly outgoings. It could be that a dramatic life event has caused problems financially, or maybe you are used to living off credit cards.

Whatever the reason, your debt is currently being slowly paid off. There’s a high chance that you could end up as a reckless Ruth if you aren’t careful. One missed payment and you would end up in financial trouble. You are only just hanging in there.

It is worth noting that in order to have a good credit rating then you need to be borrowing less than 30% of your limit on each of your credit cards. If you do then it is likely that you will be accepted for decent credit card offers. Most people who have this type of credit card personality will have average or low credit ratings.

Reckless Ruth

If you fall into the Reckless Ruth category then you will be facing serious financial problems. You will focus only upon paying the minimum balance each month and you will mainly pay later than you need to. This will cause late fees and other charges to be added onto your account. Instead of clearing your debt, you will simply be adding to it.

You will likely use your credit cards to fund everyday basic expenses. Even if you want to clear your debts, there are no possible ways that you can do so. It could be that you are simply just busy. You miss repayment dates because you lose track of time and forget when they are due. Or it could be that you don’t have the money to make the repayments on time.

Your credit card may be the only money that you can get your hands on at the moment. It is also likely that you will have a very low credit score. The thing to remember about this type of credit card personality is that you are in this position for a reason. If it is because you have been spending on impulse then you really need to address that problem. If you don’t then you will never improve your credit rating.

It is possible to make a few changes and turn your personality into more of a clinging on Christine.

The Credit Card Personality You Should Aim For

Perhaps the most realistic and sensible credit card personality to aim for is the Punctual Pete. All you need is to pay off as much as you can when you can. Aim to pay the balance off as early as possible to limit any interest charges.

The best way to pay off the debt is by direct debit a few days before it is due. You need to take into account the fact that credit card companies need time to process your payment, and this is particularly true if you are sending it through the post.

Searching for a Card that Matches Your Personality

It would be a good idea to search for a credit card that matches your personality. If you do like to pay the balance off early and you have a fantastic credit rating then it won’t matter as much which card you choose. You could opt for a card that offers you rewards. They will typically come with an annual fee but as you won’t be paying any interest on your purchases, the annual fee could be worthwhile.

If you like to pay off your debts on time and you are quite sensible, then search for a card that has a good annual interest rate.

Basically when you take into account how you spend and what your personality is, it enables you to find a card which will offer you the best benefits. If you are a clinging on Christine then aim for a card that won’t put you into serious trouble if you do miss a repayment. If you follow this advice you will be able to save yourself a lot of money and worry.

Choosing a credit card can be hard work and it is a good idea to compare as many different ones as possible. Try to be more sensible with your credit card repayments and it will help you to repair any bad credit that you may have.

It seems that suddenly everybody is talking about the economic crisis. Bankruptcy, closing, and lay off, no good news, even worse. So what do we do? First, don’t panic and be confident. Always live with an optimistic attitude even when life is a little harder sometime. No matter how hard it is now, believe in that winter is only a part of a year. Second, have a good habit to save. Keep going with the saving tips not only for the bad time. You will be paid off in the long term. Here some everyday saving tips are shared with you.

First, save with your food. Have you read the grocery flyers every week when your mail box is filled with them? If not, quickly browser it at least the cover page. You will find something you are interested with a saving price. Also almost all the chain stores have a website where you can check the online flyer or promotion news. Check it before you go regular grocery shopping. One more, expire date is your saving killer. Only buy reasonable amount and eat it before it is gone bad.

Second, tips for clothing buying. You can save more with those ideas in your mind: timing, online shopping, shopping list. Based on the history shopping trend statistics, Christmas is definitely the highest shopping season. Why? You can say, for the gifts, a lot of more free time, and flooding sale advertisement. However, you can make some change and try the January shopping. You will be surprised what you got after Christmas. It is the time for online shopping. If you would like time-saving, something unique, and saving more for the same product, try it online. Always keep a shopping or wish list and stick to it. So you have no worry about over-budget when credit card bill is coming. Maybe you can try with cash only if you can not control yourself very well with credit cards.

Third, home supplies include something big and something small. Have a long term plan for something big, such as appliances and electronics. Talk to several sales persons, not only one. Do some research on your own and take it at a right timing, such as season change or model clearing sale. Something small saving can win more if you care. You can always find a sale for Shampoo or toilet paper. Why not buying ahead instead of rush shopping at s regular price. A little planning can make you a saving winner.

Fourth, think about your transportation. Even a big drop for the oil price, you can still save more with a smart choosing a gas station for your car. Check out Gasbuddy.com for the price and cheapest gas station before you fill it up. Also, have you realized that gas is 30% cheaper in US than in Canada? If you live on the border, you are lucky enough.

Saving never means lowering your living standard and is only a bunch of good habit. You can see the difference if you can keep it for life.

5 brilliant little ways to save money
Little overlooked tips and tricks to help you save money (especially for students).

Eyeing the new iPhone 4G that rocked the tech market recently? Ever wished you can afford to have your dream car? Much time and effort would be needed, but it is definitely not impossible. It is just a question of time.

As the saying goes “money does not grow on trees”, money indeed is hard to come by. The recent economic down turn somewhat made a scar in many people’s wallet. Fortunately, the scar is starting to heal as things are starting to get bullish again. (Bull loves this)

Everybody knows that lucre is important and precious, and some people have money top their most-important-things-in-my-life list. Earning money is difficult, duh. On the other hand, money spending is like a walk in the park, like water flowing from a forgotten tap. Easy stuff it is, almost requiring null effort.

So, to survive in this modern age, we need a new kind of survival kit. We have to equip ourselves with financial knowledge. Now this is something not taught in schools. A great way to start off is to know a little about the rat race. You’ll be surprised; many people don’t even know that they’re in the race, what more coming out of it. A great book that is a must read for everyone is “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert T.Kiyosaki.

For those who are not book readers or just plain lazy (like I am), just follow these 5 tips below to save money.

Tip 1 – Say adieu to credit cards

Yeah, no kidding. Credit cards are a convenient way to shop, but don’t forget that it’s a convenient way to spend impulsively too. So, cut all of your credit cards and bid good riddance to them, and try to enjoy the process. Now without a credit card, you have to buy things with cold hard cash, which is a good way to track and control your money spending habits. Still can’t get your mind off credit cards? Don’t worry, there’s something even better than credit cards – debit cards.

Debit cards have the same look, same function, and same convenience as credit cards, minus the interests. Debit cards are more appropriate because it deducts money directly from your bank account, indirectly causing you not to overspend and think thrice before spending money your hard earned money.

Tip 2 – Go high tech and reduce papers

Papers are getting outdated. Nowadays, the advent of modern technology enables almost everything to be in a soft-copy form. Whether you’re filling up forms, writing a letter, or having a diary, paper is now optional rather than necessary, though there are some exceptions. Thinking of using Post-It notes? Just set reminders in your phone or your computer. Thinking of writing a diary? Just start a free blog. So, why spend money on papers if you can do almost everything using the PC or laptop. Yes of course, some things like official documents are still more apt in paper form but for other things, refusing the of papers is a good way to save money. Also, you can consider yourself doing a favor for the environment by saying no to papers.

Tip 3 – Food for thought – Reduce meat consumption

This may sound a little unorthodox, but believe me, this is a smart way to make your piggy bank grow in size. Meats are expensive compared to vegetables, besides being quite toxic too. The best thing to do is to become a vegetarian. Say no to meat. But this is a step most of us would find difficult, even for me, so reducing meat consumption is enough for a start to better living and saving. A vegetarian diet is so much cheaper than meat-based diet. Consider this, my mom can get vegetarian food for less than RM 20 to feed 2 people lunch and 4 people dinner. So in the long run, eating less meat would lead to big savings. At the end of the day, it’s a matter of controlling gluttony. Weigh between gluttony and money, and see for yourself which one would give a better return. Just so you know, there are also evidences to show that consumption of meat is also bad for the environment and has an impact in global hunger. It is a well known fact that cows contribute greatly to the increasing percentage of CO2 in the atmosphere. As for increasing global hunger, imagine this, to feed a cow, many acres of grass is consumed. Wouldn’t it be better if these acres of land are used to grow crops to feed people in hunger? Therefore, you can play a small part by eating less meat (or going vegan altogether) to save money, save planet Earth, and save hungry children across the globe.

Tip 4 – Get involved in social activities

If you’re living a college or university life, be alert for any club or upcoming social activities. Likewise, if you company is inviting you for a luncheon, don’t reject. Join them all if you can! This is another ingenious way to save money, albeit a twisted one. Most college or university activities uses funds from the administrative body. Thus it is common that these gatherings come with free food and drinks, or cheaper beverages to say the least. So, get active, be part of whatever activities your clubs are organizing. Make new friends, enrich your social circle, and save some money along the way.

Tip 5 – Grow your own plants

Decorate your abode with plants, but not just any plants, edible greens. If you have a garden or a land, try using it to grow vegetables. Otherwise, you could always get pots of soil and start planting away. Instead of getting an admirable plant like the bonsai, which bears neither fruits nor edibles, get some plants that are edible. It would be a better investment. Small pots of vegetables are sufficient. Like pets, just make sure you take care of their well being so that they’ll grow. One of the easiest vegetables to grow is “kangkung”. Other vegetables like herbs and chili can be grown too. Imagine, the next time you’re cooking, say, Maggi mee, you could just pluck of some leaves of the “kangkung” and throw them in the pot. Easy stuff. Remember to wash them beforehand. No need to buy vegetables no more. The only draw back: it takes some time for the vegetables to grow back again after you used them. The solution: use them sparingly.

Here is todays post on Save Money Tips

Would you think there are secret fees by using your credit cards?, the easy answer is yes, but is not that easy, in a modern and regulated world it would be almost impossible those kind of charges, of course if you are in the formal market, then there are additional fees that while are not discussed openly, they are always in the small letters of the terms of service. this article is intended to analyze two aspects of credit card fees, such as late fees and payments because of minimum balance or minimum debt penalties.

- One of the the additional fees that we always may save is late fees, just by paying on time you will save money, and not just that, there are other benefits associated with promptly payments, for instance, if you are planning your finance and one of your goal is establishing credit, credit cards are very efficient doing precisely that. Consequently, you get credit history and improve your credit score just by doing what it is supposed to do, pay on time your credit line, and you pay what is not supposed to pay just by not paying on time. However, late fees amount are different depending on the institution, but late fees can go up to .

- The other hidden and evil fee that you have to pay is when you do not keep a minimum balance or minimum debt, some credit cards require this, and the  way to go around of this is;

a.- keeping a minimum balance; it is supposed that credit cards are just for emergencies, the truth is that if you have a credit card you always will have some emergency, just be sure to keep the balance your credit card company is asking for, in order to save this fee.

b.- Buying something small with your credit card in a monthly base. Remember that you can pay back the full amount of credit used, then if there some staffs that you need to buy anyway, use your credit card just in order to save these fees.

Finally yet importantly, while credit companies are there for business and their objective is to make money, on the other hand consumers are there in order to save all the money they can, and this might be reasonable easy just by reading thoroughly the terms of service. read the small letters, those that we never read, that ways you will know in advance the fees that you are going to pay by doing or not doing something.

The issue with credit card, as opposed to other types of debt, is twofold. The first problem is that credit card debt compounds, meaning that you will be charged interest on the interest you paid in the previous months. This means that even if you have stopped spending on your cards and you make the minimum payment the actual balance can, and often does, continue to grow.

The second problem is that credit card debt is considered ‘bad debt.’ A mortgage is ‘good debt’ because once it is paid off you have a valuable house, which is not the case with credit card debt. Most of us spend on our credit cards with things that have no value after the fact, groceries, clothes, and petrol are all necessities but could not be part of our personal finance portfolio.

Even though you probably know that credit card debt is bad and that you could use the extra cash each month if it was paid off you might not know how to go about doing that. The first step in any debt repayment process is to sit down and make an honest analysis of your debt and your income. Try not to be too hard on yourself as you look at the numbers. Many Australians, and other humans in general, are in your same position. The debt is probably higher then you ever imagined and your income pales in comparison to it. Next, look at how much you are spending on interest and fees for those credit cards. Once you know how much your credit card debt costs, you can more easily figure out how much you can spend to consolidate it.

What Is Credit Card Debt Consolidation?

If you choose to do credit card debt consolidation you are simply choosing to combine your debt into one large bill instead of the several small bills you are currently paying each month. Although it might seem scary to have one huge bill instead of a bunch of little bills, it will usually make paying it back cheaper. You will often be able to get a lower interest rate and a significant reduction in fees by consolidating your debt. Of course, as with everything, you will have to take the time to calculate all of the costs of your consolidation plan to make sure that you are saving money. This will include your new interest rate and any fees that you may have to pay to complete the transaction. In most cases, the savings will be significant.

There are typically two paths people take to pay off their credit card debt. A personal loan or a balance transfer. The first option, a personal loan, is fairly straightforward. You will have to apply for a loan from your bank. The loan gives you money that clears off your credit card debts. The advantage to this is that the interest rate you pay on the personal loan is usually significantly lower then what you are paying on each individual card. A personal loan will probably have some account maintenance and application fees associated with it an possibly an early repayment fee. The monthly payment and the interest rate on this loan should be fixed which will make budgeting simple for you.

A second option is to do a credit card balance transfer. The balance transfer is usually offered by card companies as an introductory offer that is intended to lure you into giving them your business. The beauty of these cards is that you can transfer your current balances over to them and take advantage of significantly low rates. Balance transfer rates can range from as low at zero interest for three months to just under five percent for twelve months or even for life. Be careful though, because these introductory offers come with significant rules. For example, if you miss a payment or make a late payment you are likely to lose that introductory rate which puts you back to square one. In order to avoid this situation you should consider setting up a direct draft that will pay the bill on time each month. However, do not just make the minimum payment. Pay as much as you can each month and make sure it is enough to pay off the balance before your introductory rate expires.

The best choice is to make sure that your balance transfer offers you enough time to pay off your debt, even if it means paying a slightly higher interest rate. It is also important not to use these cards for purchases until the balance transfer is completely clear. If you do you could wind up in an allocation of payments trap that costs you loads of money in interest. This is because credit cards companies will put all of your payment toward the cheapest debt first, so those purchases will sit, unpaid and collecting interest, until after you pay off your balance transfer. If you can manage it, a balance transfer is an excellent option but, you must have fairly good credit to get a new balance transfer card. In addition, there are some fees associated with this option so you will have to make absolutely sure that by doing it you are still saving money.
Working your way out of credit card debt can seem like a scary prospect. However, by choosing the option that best suits you and your finances you can free yourself from those staggering credit card bills once and for all. After you have done that you might try switching to a debit card or sticking to a strict budget to make sure that you never again wind up in this spot. Most of us got into credit card debt because we were not paying attention and wound up spending far more money then we actually make. That, added to the incredibly high interest rates on most credit cards and fees for missed and late payments cause a debt spiral that is feels impossible to escape. It is not impossible, it just takes creative thinking and dedication to getting out of debt forever.

Just take a peek at the people around you these days, and you will discover that at least half of the people you know are already sinking in piling up debts. I have found that more and more people these days are finding it quite hard to pay up their bills, and this is quite sad in itself. The problem is not a simple one as one might think./ Some people might just say that people of this generation are reckless with money and do not have effective budgets over their lives. This might be true, though, but it is not all there is to this phenomenon. The problem is with our economy.

The economy is sitting on a volcanic crater about to go up in smoke and you can see the signs of the instability quite visibly if you look hard enough. Just reason it out. More and more people are losing their jobs. For those who are already in credit card debts, they will find out that all the high interest rates, the late payment and overcharge cost tends to make them sink more and more into the cold embrace of an indebted life. However, there is still a glimmer of hope at the end of this tunnel. You can still get to have your debts repaid through the use of cheap credit consolidation loans.

How do I do this?

It is actually a simple process. All you have to do is make an application for a high balance credit card. This is the credit card you will then use to pay off your old bills so you can get the creditors off your neck. This is quite beneficial because by using this method, you will not have to surf through too many monthly bills like you used to do before. This process will l=help you save a lot of money since you will have your debts under one umbrella rather than scattered in different credit cards.

This method will also ensure that your credit card history will get a boost. Since the consolidation loan offers you a plastic card whereby you can then transfer all your debts and begin to pay them off one by one, it will stand to reason that as you pay up rapidly enough, your credit card rating will show favorable changes, and the improvement will of course reflect in your credit report. This is the direct result of the fact that now you get to pay your debts rapidly, and this will work to reduce your accumulated debts as well.

I candidly suggest that if you find yourself in debts from credit cards, then you should really consider the option of the credit card consolidation loans. This will put all your eggs in one basket, making it easier for you to get an organized view of things. In the end, it shouldn’t be really hard for you to pay your debts, and you will do so in good speed too.
