What Amount Could You Be Claiming Back In Bank Fees? Background To Reclaiming My Bank Charges

Basically, you can reclaim unfair bank charges you have incurred within the previous 6 years. This includes excessive fees for being overdrawn, letters informing you about bounced cheques and failed direct debits and the likes. If the action was likely to have only cost the bank a small amount and they have charged you significantly more, then there’s a chance of a reclaim. If these fees have caused you to incur further charges or interest, then you will also have a case there.

Image via Wikipedia

As well as these, you can reclaim for interest on the amount you are claiming – the interest you would have earned on the money had it been in your account.

But how should you find how much the bank has charged you?

First, if you can refer to your bank statements for the past 6 years then you just need to go through them. If you haven’t kept them all, if you are registered for online banking (or can register) then you may be able to determine the fees from there.

Finally, if none of these are possible then you have to go to your bank. Asking for copies of back statements can prove quite costly (and these charges DO NOT count as excessive!!!). But if you know exact dates of charges, then this might be not too expensive. But the other way is to write to the bank, quoting the Data Protection Act 1998, asking them to tell you for all charges on the account:

? what the offence was

? the date of the offence / fee

? the amount of the fee

The bank has, by law, only 40 working days to answer your request. But it is allowed to charge you a fee of up to ?10, so it is worth while including in this letter the full ?10 fee made payable to the bank.

If your bank tries to send you a copy of your statements they can try to charge you for that. To prevent this, ensure that you tell the bank you are using the Data Protection Act 1998 to get a list of all charges.

Expenses

You can also claim expenses incurred in making your reclaim, although this can be best left in case the claim gets as far as the court stage and then used as a bargaining tool to stop that. Simply put, if the bank see that you will accept repayment now, or repayment plus costs if they don’t accept that, then there’s a financial incentive to them to settle.

Reasonable fees include court fees and a case has also included costs of preparing the case. To reclaim this, make a record of how much time you spend preparing your case then include a charge at ?9.25 per hour (the legal entitlement).

It would seem that the computer is becoming a bigger and bigger part of our lives each and every day. There’s good reason for that perception… it’s true. One specific area that is becoming incredibly popular is online banking. Customers love it because it is very convenient and a great time saver. The banks love it because it automates a great many functions for them and cuts down on their overhead. But is your Banking Information Safe?

Image via Wikipedia

Thenumber one concern of anyone that deals with online banking should be security. Putting your personal information over the Internet can be risky, there is no denying that but you do want to pay your bills online. Fraud and identity theft have become huge problems in the modern age. There are any number of hackers and thieves out there in cyberspace just waiting to prey on innocent people. you also have to be careful with Mobile banking

Fortunately for us, Mobile banking, the financial institutions of the world are very aware of this problem and are working aggressively to combat it. There was a time when a bank’s chief security concern was whether they would be robbed or not. I think we’ve all seen the old movies about Bonnie & Clyde, John Dillinger and the like… to say nothing of the daring train robberies of the wild west. Now banks face a new and much deadlier challenge than ever before, and instead of wearing a mask and using a gun, the bad guys are now invisible and use keyboards.

Identity theft has now become so prevalent that thieves are rifling through garbage to attain any information that they can use to steal from their unsuspecting victims. With this said, there are some simple, common sense approaches that will go along way to securing personal bank information.

1. Do not share your passwords with anyone.

2. Keep important documents locked in a safe or safety deposit box.

3. Shred documents that you no longer need.

4. If you bank online, make sure your bank is using a secure, encrypted site (It’s OK to ask what security features they employ).

5. When using an ATM make sure no one can see the codes you enter.

These are a just a few of the things that can be done to keep Mobile banking information secure and to avoid possible crimes against you. While many of these suggestions seem to be glaringly obvious, all to many times they are taken for granted or just plain ignored. It is at these times when the criminals are at their best. Individuals that grow careless and complacent are exactly what criminals look for. Don’t be counted as one of the careless!

The standard system of banking and paying routine bills has changed marvelously since the Internet has come into the picture. While the old-school process of bill paying prevalently consisted of receiving electric, gas, water, credit card, student loan and insurance bills through snail mail, now days you have a selection. You no longer have to grapple with monthly envelopes, paper statements and stamps. The World Wide Web has introduced us all to a much more handy method of paying bills electronically. So if you currently don’t pay bills online, you should really reconsider. It’s not only easier, it’s safer as well.

Latest News on Paying Bills Online:

Most banks offer their consumers the option to pay bills online. This should be a free feature when you sign up for a new bank account. Be sure to ask about this specifically, because some banks actually still charge you fees for online banking and bill paying. Regardless, let’s examine some of the features that readily go along with paying bills online. You can set up a regular scheduled payment for each monthly bill you have. This keeps things convenient because the sum is then pulled out of your checking account each month on its own. While this works great for mortgage and car payments, it faultlessly won’t work as well for electric or water bills merely because they fluctuate. However, you can still pay these bills monthly with ease. Many people choose this modern method of bill paying purely due to the fact that it’s easy and does not want stamps and trips to the post office.

Go paperless! This is an awesome aspect of online banking and the option to pay bills online. Let’s say you want to pay your monthly credit card bill online. Not a problem. You can literally go paperless and receive no statements via snail mail. You instead will receive an email once each month with your statement posted online. All you need is a password for this. When you pay bills online for credit cards, you actually have a little more time to pay it since you’re credited the date it’s submitted electronically. Furthermore, many people enjoy the aspect of their personal information not floating around in trash cans and dumpsters. Going paperless can help put a stop to identity theft and more.
